Nezha's Ollie: Riding the Waves of Legend and Subculture, a 4-foot stainless steel sculpture, reinterprets the mythological figure Nezha through a modern lens. Since ancient times, Nezha has been well-known for defying authority and breaking conventions, whose spirit of not fearing power and daring to challenge rigid cultural norms is endowed with new meanings in the contemporary context. This work ingeniously fuses ancient mythological themes with contemporary pop culture, and draws inspiration from the fluid movements of surfing and skateboarding, encapsulating the essence of freedom, exuberance, and rebellion. Such a design presents Nezha as a symbol of personal identity and dynamic self-expression, which encourages viewers to embrace their individuality, echoing the fluidity and versatility inherent in modern youth culture.
The sculpture depicts Nezha in a moment of dynamic motion: his form poises in mid-air as he defies gravity with the fluid grace of a skateboarder, embodying the agility and fearlessness for which he is renowned. The shape not only reflects the energetic and flowing movements associated with surfing and skateboarding, but also grounds the figure in a way that maintains both strength and stability. The pose suggests both freedom and control, capturing a moment of balance between chaos and order. Meanwhile, the proportions of the figure are subtly exaggerated to emphasize the fluidity of movement, enhancing the overall dynamic and energetic quality of the piece while maintaining a sense of realism and balance.
Fusing the traditional with the contemporary, RIDE-Nezha is not just a tribute to tradition; it’s also a celebration of contemporary subculture. The color palette is a mix of deep, rich tones with metallic highlights, designed to evoke both the natural world (surfing, waves) and the bright, playful aesthetic of pop culture. The metallic finish creates a contrast, adding a contemporary and bold edge to the sculpture. The skateboard, as a crucial part of the sculpture, not only becomes the core carrier of storytelling, but also speaks to the rebellious spirit and creativity of skateboarding culture through its edgy graffiti-style designs. It conveys the firm support for individual freedom and self-expression.
