The Luminous Weave – Luhe Service and Maintenance Building Façade Lighting
In Hemei Township, Changhua County—long celebrated as Taiwan’s “town of textiles”—the Luhe Service and Maintenance Building reimagines how architecture and light can embody both civic presence and cultural heritage. Formerly the Hemei Service Office, the new facility for Taiwan Power Company adopts a façade of layered shading devices, their composition evoking the interlacing patterns of woven cloth. At night, the building comes alive as light itself becomes the thread, weaving together place, memory, and community.
By day, the architecture presents a rational, efficient image befitting a public utility. By night, hidden LED fixtures softly illuminate the façade, revealing depth and texture through light and shadow. The concrete grid and timber surfaces are transformed into a luminous textile, projecting warmth and inclusivity. This shift in identity allows the building to move beyond its functional role, becoming a welcoming presence in the neighborhood and a symbol of connection between institution and community.
The design carefully avoids excess. All fixtures employ energy-efficient LEDs, embedded within the architectural louvers and window frames to preserve visual clarity while minimizing equipment exposure and maintenance. Automated sensors adjust brightness according to use, reducing energy waste and extending system life. Light distribution was meticulously controlled to prevent glare and protect the comfort of pedestrians and nearby residents, ensuring the building integrates seamlessly into the urban fabric.
The project achieves innovation through duality: a modernist structure by day, and a woven lantern by night. Its illumination recalls the threads of Hemei’s textile tradition, recasting a civic building as a cultural landmark. In this way, the Luhe Building demonstrates how light can transcend function to serve as both cultural expression and gentle companion in daily urban life.
