Governors Island Conservatory and Climate Center reimagines the conservatory as a climate-adaptive public destination for botanical research, environmental education, and waterfront resilience. Located on the eastern edge of Governors Island in New York Harbor, the project proposes a self-sustaining micro ecological island where transparent conservatory structures, research spaces, water systems, and public circulation are integrated into one living environmental campus.

Responding to rising temperatures, severe weather events, and sea-level change, the project transforms the traditional glasshouse into a living and breathing climate system. Its conservatories support weather-sensitive plant collections, rainwater collection, hydroponic cultivation, passive microclimate regulation, and solar-powered ecological infrastructure. Rather than hiding sustainable systems, the design makes them visible and experiential, allowing visitors to learn through direct engagement with plants, water, light, and environmental processes.

Accessible by boat and ferry, the center becomes both a landmark destination and a test ground for future architecture at the water’s edge. By combining conservatory culture, climate research, public learning, and resilient island infrastructure, the proposal positions Governors Island as a beacon for ecological adaptation and future environmental imagination.
