Redefining Tokyo’s Red Districts: Empowering Marginalized Communities through Urban Architecture
The urban fabric of Tokyo’s red-light districts reflects the remnants of a male-dominated society, shaped by post-war city-building policies that are deeply hierarchical, exclusionary, and hostile towards women and diversity. In these districts, female sex workers are marginalized—intentionally hidden and erased from the main urban landscape. The prevailing architectural typologies and material assemblages perpetuate this erasure, reflecting a societal structure where masculine desire exerts control over the fear of the female or "the other."
This project envisions an alternative urban structure that supports female sex workers seeking to leave their previous engagements and embark on new careers. By reimagining the role of architecture in fostering inclusion and empowerment, the proposal introduces a network of three interconnected building types, designed to transform the existing fabric:
Multi-functional Learning Center (Large): A hub for education and vocational training, offering diverse pathways for career transition.
Spreading Daycare Centers (Medium): Accessible, community-focused childcare facilities integrated throughout the district, enabling women to pursue their new careers with confidence.
Online Support App (Small): A digital platform providing continuous support and resources for women, connecting them to professional and social services.
Together, these interventions form a cohesive system aimed at dismantling the exclusionary urban hierarchy, fostering inclusivity, and empowering marginalized communities. By reshaping Tokyo’s red-light districts, this project challenges the architectural norms that perpetuate inequality, offering a vision of a more just and diverse urban future.
