HFG recently completed the design for Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya, delivering a state-of-the-art 294,731 SF Heart Surgery Center that stands as one of Africa's leading innovators in heart health. This facility includes five cardiothoracic ORs, a hybrid OR/catheter lab, a dedicated catheter lab, four endoscopy procedure spaces, and a capacity for 175 patient beds across four floors of patient wards. Additionally, it features advanced educational spaces to train cardiothoracic fellows, perfusion fellows, anesthesiology fellows, and specialized cardiothoracic nurses.

HFG's comprehensive scope of work spanned medical planning, schematic design, design development, program production, and healthcare-specific design. Through close collaboration with hospital staff, analysis of census data, and alignment with the hospital's anticipated goals, HFG achieved a design that meets current and future needs. Insights from repeated site visits informed solutions tailored to the region's unique challenges.

To ensure operational resiliency during frequent power interruptions, the facility incorporates a mechanically assisted natural ventilation system with full humidity and temperature control for surgical and critical patient areas. Supplemental ramps ensure uninterrupted patient movement. The design integrates sustainability through solar panels on a low-slope standing seam roof, hollow core concrete blocks produced on-site, and a rainwater collection system repurposed for on-site laundry.

The project also includes housing for visiting fellows, with residential towers featuring 15 three-bedroom and five two-bedroom apartments conveniently near the hospital. Enhanced water infrastructure now provides reliably clean water to the entire medical campus, sourced from a nearby river.
