About The Entry

TubeTour is an AI-powered navigation application designed for one specific use case: exploring London by tube. While countless apps help tourists find attractions, TubeTour focuses on the unique challenge of navigating the city through its iconic Underground system—the primary way millions experience London.

The project addresses a fundamental problem: first-time visitors want to travel like Londoners, but the tube map feels like a secret code. Standard apps overwhelm users with information, while London's complex zone system adds confusion. Most frustratingly, when travelers change plans mid-journey—lingering longer at a market, skipping a museum—their apps offer no flexibility.

TubeTour's core innovation is an adaptive itinerary system built for tube-based exploration. The application evolves in real-time as users move through the network, learning from location, time spent at attractions, and weather to refine recommendations. If a user lingers at Covent Garden, TubeTour automatically adjusts the afternoon itinerary. This dynamic approach mirrors how people actually explore cities by tube—changing direction on a whim, following discoveries.

The design organizes everything around transportation hubs, reflecting how tube travelers think. Users see attractions near each station, ranked by popularity, plus practical information tourists actually need: which exit leads to the British Museum, step-free access, transfer details. A dual-mode planning system offers DIY control—read, save, choose dates—and smart mode that generates complete tube-based itineraries automatically.

User testing with international tourists in London demonstrated significant improvements: route planning time reduced by 47 percent, user confidence increased by 62 percent. One participant captured the essence: "It felt like having a local friend who knows both the tube and the hidden spots."

The project underwent double-blind peer review and was published in Design Journal (DOI: 10.20055/j.cnki.1003-0069.000753).

TubeTour reimagines the tourist experience through the lens of the London Underground—transforming stressful navigation into enjoyable exploration, helping visitors discover the city not despite the tube, but because of it.
