Xinyuan represents a bold reimagining of the traditional Taiwanese teahouse, bridging the gap between historical culinary heritage and the vibrant, health-conscious energy of a modern café. Designed to appeal to a younger generation while honoring the soul of Taiwanese cuisine, the space is a study in the harmony of opposites: urban vs. natural, cold vs. warm, and historical vs. contemporary.
The design journey begins with a striking stainless steel facade. The reflective surfaces and modern lines are punctuated by "roof eaves," a symbolic architectural gesture that invokes the warmth and security of returning home. This threshold is balanced by a raised platform, a thoughtful integration of Feng Shui principles designed to retain "energy" and create a buffer from the bustling streetscape.
The heart of the interior is the Ginkgo leaf—a "living fossil" that serves as both the restaurant’s logo and its conceptual anchor. Symbolizing eternity and resilient life, the heart-shaped ginkgo motif is woven throughout the space, most notably in the custom tiles and the symmetrical layouts that offer a sense of profound stability. The long, narrow floor plan is articulated into distinct modular zones. The central "Water Bar" acts as a minimalist anchor, blending the industrial coolness of a gray palette with the organic warmth of wood accents.
Moving toward the rear, the design transitions into an "earthy" sanctuary. The ceiling in this zone is a masterpiece of organic form, designed to appear as if it is growing upward from the earth, enveloping diners in a cocoon-like embrace. Semi-private round tables, inspired by geometric abstractions and outdoor umbrellas, provide intimate dining pockets without sacrificing spatial flow.
Xinyuan is more than a restaurant; it is a modular prototype for the future of Taiwanese dining. By stripping away the heavy oils of tradition and replacing them with light-filled, textured spaces, the design team has created a sanctuary that celebrates the "spirit" of the past while looking firmly toward a healthy, elevated future.
