Little Wish

In a dense urban fabric on the outskirts of Taipei, a ten-square-meter apartment stood as a relic of outdated typologies. Enclosed balconies, narrow openings, and the accumulation of makeshift furniture had rendered the space dark and compressed. The limitation was not only its size but its inability to breathe.

Working with the aspirations of a retired teacher whose life had been shaped by rhythm and routine, the design sought not order through division but balance through connection. The apartment was reimagined as a space that could hold daily rituals with intimacy and care, where small gestures such as drawing a curtain, placing a book, or opening a window could define the rhythm of living. Constraint became the starting point for a new spatial language, one that values clarity, proportion, and quiet innovation.

Boundaries between functions were softened, allowing no zone to stand in isolation. Curves eased transitions between living, dining, and cooking, creating overlaps that shared light and movement within the compact footprint. The former utility balcony was opened to extend the flow of space, dissolving its threshold and drawing daylight deep into the interior. A lighter kitchen configuration improved circulation, while half-height cabinetry and curtains provided flexible separation without enclosure.

Through these gestures, the apartment expands beyond its measure. Light now choreographs daily life, surfaces remain calm and continuous, and every element performs with measured precision. What was once a congested relic has become an open, adaptable dwelling that reflects the rise of modern design—transforming limitation into elegance, and smallness into a statement of refined urban living.
