Living Loop explores how architecture can bring ecological research into everyday public life. Located within the wooded landscape of Red Hook, New York, this research center for artists and scientists connects material experimentation, creative practice, and environmental learning. The project proposes a shared setting where the study of nature informs both the building and the activities it supports.
Inspired by Gaia Theory and Material Ecology, Living Loop organizes its program around a continuous sequence of material sourcing, research, prototyping, fabrication, and exhibition. This sequence connects scientific inquiry with artistic production, allowing ideas to develop across disciplines. Laboratories and workshops remain visually connected to public circulation, making the transformation of materials accessible to visitors and encouraging dialogue about how resources are used.
Cross-laminated timber forms the primary structural and spatial framework. As a renewable building material, timber gives tangible expression to the project's ecological ambitions. Folded, self-supporting members create generous spaces for experimentation, making, and gathering, while their geometry establishes a recognizable architectural identity. Structure and circulation work together to connect individual research areas with shared facilities and public programs.
A suspended folded façade takes inspiration from rock formations and geological layers. Its changing depth mediates daylight and shade, frames views toward the forest and Hudson River, and creates a layered relationship between interior activity and the surrounding landscape. The building invites occupants to remain aware of the natural setting in which their work takes place.
Sustainability is embedded in the relationships among materials, spaces, and people. Shared workshops support collaboration, exhibitions communicate research to a broader audience, and interconnected programs encourage the exchange of knowledge and resources. The public route makes these relationships legible, connecting spaces of observation with places for discussion and collective learning.
Living Loop presents ecological responsibility as an ongoing practice of investigating, making, sharing, and reconsidering. By bringing these activities into one timber framework, the center offers an architectural platform for exploring more thoughtful ways of building and living, while connecting environmental research with the communities it can serve.
