Saudi Arabia

Despite Saudi Arabia’s rich history and culture, the development of cinemas, theatres, and performing arts venues remained limited until Vision 2030 brought a renewed focus on culture, tourism, and the arts. In response, Dhahran Expo set out to create a leading regional destination for conferences, exhibitions, and international events, later expanding the vision to include an opera house in Al Khobar, a vibrant city attracting both residents and visitors. The ambition is to shape a development that stands as a cultural landmark and architectural statement, not just a venue, but a place that encourages dialogue, reflects national ambition, and becomes part of the city’s identity.

Al Khobar plays a key role as a regional hub, and the Expo master plan supports its ongoing transformation. The development is envisioned as a premier international destination, bringing together a convention center, hotel, exhibition halls, an outdoor concert arena, and multi level parking to reshape the city’s urban and cultural landscape.

At the heart of the project is the convention center, designed as a sculptural form inspired by human movement and cultural flow. Located at the forefront of the site, it acts as the main anchor and is easily accessible from all directions. Its centerpiece is a world class 2,200 seat auditorium, one of the largest in the Middle East, featuring a rotating drum system that allows it to be divided into three separate theatres for simultaneous use. The building is designed to feel open and connected, maintaining strong visual and physical links with its surroundings.

Inside, the space unfolds as a multi level urban platform with terraces and open voids that encourage movement, interaction, and exploration. It includes exhibition halls, workshops, an art gallery, a fine dining restaurant, and an outdoor terrace for events. The layout supports efficient circulation for up to 5,000 visitors.

The design also responds carefully to Al Khobar’s climate. The northern façade brings in natural daylight while reducing heat, while the southern façade uses a double wall system and recessed glazing for protection. A bold overhanging canopy adds shade, defines the building’s character, and enhances its overall presence.
